Amazon.com essential video
Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there's more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise's effortless charm and the movie's timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to another version of this video.

From Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide
Piquant, original comedy about a reticent teenager who goes a bit wild while his parents are out of town, and becomes involved--in more ways than one--with a prostitute. Brickman's darkly satiric script is balanced by Cruise's utterly likable (and believable) performance in the lead.

4 out of 5 stars Porsche there is no substitute.

This is the most believable acting Tom Cruise has done before he started taking himself way too seriously. Great plot, superb soundtrack, very humorous and erotic. Worth the time to see.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes you just have to say what the heck
Reviewer: A viewer      July 24, 1999
I thought it was a terrific movie. I felt like I had every one of Cruise's phobia's when I was his age. And when he's frantic to get out of class and the clock somehow goes back a minute--I've been there, too. Besides Cruise's charm, Curtis Armstrong is funny as his friend who worries about his midterm while being chased by Guido, the killer pimp. I lived in Chicago then and a photographer friend told me that the hookers at the party were Chicago fashion models. One of the models was Candace Collins, who did some work for Playboy before an interviewer asked her if it was sexist and she answered yes. Then the magazine dropped her like a rock. --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.

3 out of 5 stars If you didn't like Tom Cruise before, you will now
Reviewer: A viewer from Los Angeles, CA      May 21, 1999
This was Tom Cruise's big break and he deserved it after this movie. You can see why he got popular after this movie. He is the main reason I watch this movie. The story is pretty good. but it wouldn't be the same without Tom. It is one of those few movies where teenagers actually have some level of intelligence (but maybe not through the whole movie!) This one will definitely make you a Tom Cruise fan! --This text refers to the DVD edition.

5 out of 5 stars You just can't pass up one of the greatest movies of alltime
Reviewer: Hockyplaa@aol.com  1_stripes from Pittsburgh, PA      January 25, 1999
Anybody reading this that remembers the anxiety of getting into college, and the pressure of peers will absolutely fall in love with this movie. It stars a young an innocent Tom Cruise and a naughty ReBecca DeMorray. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing due to Tangerine Dream's mix of eighties sounds. Also, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and the Talking Heads are some others that team up to contribute to this movie. Cruise and DeMorray team up to give audiences what may be their best perfomances. A MUST SEE!!!!!!!!!!! --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.
