The romance of the Wild West was very much alive when the first silent horse operas made matinee idols out of William S. Hart and other stoic cowpokes. With sound came serials and singing cowboys, and, in 1939, a quantum leap in visual and dramatic ambition--John Ford's Stagecoach, which introduced the sweeping vistas of Monument Valley and Ford's more complex, valedictory view of the men and women of the West. In the decades since, the western has been expanded, forgotten, rediscovered, reinvented, lampooned, and deconstructed--but the best Westerns remain unique cinematic canvases.
