As senior vice president, Dr. Somekh was named a member of the Office of the President in January 1998. Dr. Somekh is responsible for Applied Materials' products, products roadmap and the Company's technological capability.
Dr. Somekh previously was senior vice president of Worldwide Product Operations, appointed to that position in 1994. Prior to that position, he was group vice president of the Conductor Technologies Division, where he directed the development of the Endura PVD, (physical vapor deposition), introduced in 1990. Earlier, he served as vice president of the Applied Deposition Technology Division, where he was responsible for engineering and operations of the Precision 5000 CVD, (chemical vapor deposition), integrated processing system introduced in 1987. He joined the Company in 1980 as project manager in the Etch Division and was responsible for the engineering of the AME 8100, Applied Material's first etch system introduced in 1981.
Before joining Applied Materials, Dr. Somekh was manager of the Dry Etch Group at Intel Corporation. Prior to that, he was on the Bell Laboratories technical staff.
Dr. Somekh has been recognized for his many contributions to the semiconductor industry. In 1988, he received the SEMMY Award, presented annually by the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Institute, for his work in establishing plasma etch as a production technology in semiconductor processing. In 1993, he was recognized as a developer of the Precision 5000 system at its induction as the first semiconductor manufacturing system to be placed in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. In 1994, Dr. Somekh received the SEMI Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the semiconductor equipment industry.
Dr. Somekh received his B.S. in physics from Tel Aviv University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
