Business Summary
UAL Corporation is a holding company for its principal subsidiary, United Air Lines, Inc. During 1998, United carried, on average, more than 238,000 passengers per day and flew more than 125 billion revenue passenger miles. United has a global network of hubs primarily designed to fly travelers between North America and the Pacific, Latin America and Europe. North American hubs include Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. (Dulles). United also operates a major hub in Tokyo. The Star Alliance is an integrated worldwide transport network that provides customers with global recognition and a wide range of other benefits. The Star Alliance, of which United is a founding member, includes Lufthansa, Air Canada, SAS, Thai Airways, Varig, as well as the newest additions, Air New Zealand, Ansett Australia and Nippon Airways. This alliance allows customers access to over 600 destinations around the world.
Financial Summary
UAL is a holding company whose principal subsidiary is United Air Lines, which engages in commercial air transportation of people, property and mail. For the nine months ended 9/30/99, revenues rose 2% to $13.55 billion. Net income before extraordinary item applicable to Common rose 47% to $1.11 billion. Revenues reflect increases in revenue passenger miles. Net income benefited from a $669 million gain on the sale of Galileo stock.
