Pain etc,
For what its worth, people that live in a very physical enviroment or do intensely physical things will get to know and then accept pain as part of the road to the end goal. For example climbers long distance runners weight trainers, and even metal smiths like myself. Its par for the course so to speak. Over the long and varied life ive had ive experienced much pain largely due to accidents of some sort or other. When I had my first piercing about 12 months ago the pain was no different to any other Ive experienced, and of short duration. the last piercing I had was difficult and as I knew what to expect I was able to breathe through it.

I was asked about pain before my first piercing and though it was a factor I considered I also put it in context of other, non piercing pain I had had. The sharp, 2 seconds of pain I felt getting pierced was no where near the dull annoying throbbing that comes with a headache. For me, comparitavily speaking, the pain that comes with a piercing is part of the experience and given the results, well worth it braving it out in the beginning.

I felt NO....absolutely NO pain when I had my nip pierced. I don't know if it truely didn't hurt or if it was because I was so nervous about getting it done that I blocked it out...or maybe the clamp was so tight that it cut off all sensation to my nip...who knows. I have 4 tats....one hurt like hell, 2 were so-so and the other was nothing to speak about. So everyone is different when it comes to pain...and I believe it depends on many different things as to if a person feels anything at all or if it hurt like hell. I don't think the question "did it hurt" is stupid because people asked it for different reasons.

i only speak for myself when i say that i don't really care for the pain that comes with most mods...hence the name aesthete, ie. i do these things for mainly aesthetic reasons, and i don't think that there's anything wrong with that. of course, once you do get thru the procedure and you realize that you're not dead, you feel completely invincible and you could kick everyone's ass cause you're so tough.

we all vary in pain tolerances (mine is fairly high, but sometimes i get really scared) and reasons for changing ourselves...some people embrace pain, like in the bdsm scene. to me, i couldn't really understand that, however i'm not going do discount it or argue about it since it's a completely valid opinion/philosophy (for lack of a better term).

2for1,

i'd be really worried about the piercer if they put on a clam so tight that it actually hurt. that's a bad sign.

I have a couple questions. First off, can anybody repost that gauge information everyone's talking about. I'm really interested, but there is no longer a sexual-interaction board. Second, what the hell is the smelly, nasty stuff that I find on my plugs when I take them out?? I've had them for quite awhile and they are definitely healed. Does this stuff last forever?? Any help on these two questions would be greatly appreciated.

Loco (or anybody else),
Since you mention it, do you have Cryst-Chylde's email? I have a friend in Denver that I'd like to refer to CC for a tongue piercing.

Thanks

brandon,

i'll take a guess that your plugs are acrylic or something similar. acrylic jewelry is known to make piercings stink.. no, wait. your piercing is what smells, but that jewelry is what makes it noticeable. that smell is your body's natural oils. all i can say for sure is that as soon as i switched to stainless plugs, the smell went away.

anyone else want to help here? ;)

brandon--i too have experienced the ear stink of which you speak, and it was _much_ more noticable when i wore acrylics, and even more noticible when i wore wood. these materials, i guess, soak up yer body's oils and whatnot, and transmit the stink over time and space. i don't have ear stench with my stainless eyelets, but there is still some grubbyness on the eyelets when i take them out to clean them; dead skin cells, soap residue dirt--they all figure in, i bet.

hope this helps.

Message from Trid at 20:44:03 12-14-1999 [206.27.37.28 ]
The stink is actually a combination of body oils, dead skin (the inside of a piercing sheds layers just as any other part ofyour skin) and the by-products of the resident microbes present on healthy skin.

As acrylic and wood (especially wood) are somewhat porous as compared to stainless, they have a tendency to accumulaty the stinky stuff a bit more.

i just read an experience in the scarification section that well i don't know. i don't know how to react to it.fear? sorrow? anger? it's the scarification w/ a power drill story.in a way it freaked me out. that someone would do it for the reasons he did it.and i know that there are so many more ppl that do this for the same reasons.i don't get ppl.

Aesthete, that's not what I said...I was just pointing out that I have really no idea why I felt no pain during my piercing. As far as the clamp being too tight...no, it wasn't, because I felt it on there...so - no "fear" of that! ( sorry, a little play on words...I couldn't resist!)

"Pain"
What a beautiful sensation! For me, Pain does not scare me, I actually embrace it. I do not get nervous what so ever. when I have gotten pierced, I just close my eyes and enjoy it. As for my tattoo's, I sit there and take it, and at the same time, love every minute of it! When I tell people that don't understand it, they look at me as if I am from another planet! Not to mention, I would perfer to get a two day tattoo's all at once than to go through emotional pain that haunts you a life time!!!!!!!

Message from M-Cat at 13:58:21 12-15-1999 [209.156.234.148 ]
Flowerchild....I know just what you mean by the emotional pain. A surface pain for me is kind of like a release on the inner pain I feel and I find that when there's a lot of inner pain I tend to get more piercings and tattoos at that particular time. This year it has happened so much that all I have to do is e-mail my piercer and simply say "it's time" and he understands. LOL.....

I actually thought that the pain of getting my nipples pierced was awesome. I saw the needle go through and thought "this is it?" and I wanted to do it again. I just love watching the needle when ever I can. I much prefer getting pierced over an imunization any day of the week. :)

Message from aesthete at 16:01:22 12-15-1999 [216.126.75.130 ]
well, you all have good points...i've been sitting in the chair at the doctor's office, all scared of an anaesthetic needle or whatever, and then i realize that its no big deal. and i can deal with the pain of piercing, but i think that's just about it. for a lot of people (ie "i actually embrace the pain" etc) the procedure is the end in itself, whereas for me, currently, its the means to an end. that's why my name's aesthete, not masochist.

and i don't really fear pain either, because i know it'll go away in a matter of seconds. and i feel better for having gone thru it.

i couldn't possibly explain all my motivations in one single posting here. and i doubt a lot of people can.
