3 ARRESTED IN CYCLIST'S BEATING

Three Asian men have been arrested in the beating of a black bicyclist, police said.

Witnesses told police that about 15 Asian men in several cars began calling out racial slurs as a 23-year-old black man rode his bicycle on Regent Street about 3 a.m. Saturday. The cyclist was chased and beaten. Three men, ages 19, 22 and 23, were apprehended nearby.

CAMPER KILLED BY LIGHTNING

Lightning struck five people a campground over the weekend, killing one man and critically injuring another.

Shane E. Hulbert, 26, was pronounced dead after lightning hit the Apple River Campground late Saturday in Somerset. Another victim was listed in critical condition. Three others were treated at the scene and released.

University of Michigan researchers reportedly have discovered a material that can survive for millions of years and withstand radiation for 30 million years.

Shixin Wang, a research fellow at the university, made the breakthrough after 15 years of research. Experiments involving radiation were conducted in Japan and Illinois.

FORD TRACES SUSPECT TIRES TO STRIKE PERIOD IN DECATUR

Many of the 6.5 million Firestone tires being recalled were made during a strike at the company's Decatur, Ill., plant, Ford Motor Co. said Sunday.

Ford did an analysis of its Firestone tires and the complaints it received to pin down where the tires were made and what may have caused the treads on some to separate. The tires are under investigation in hundreds of crashes that caused at least 46 deaths.
