National Bunco Association
It was reported last week that the cost for a family of four to go to an average NBA game has risen 11 percent from last season, to $266.61. Wait, wait, wait! Can that be true -- $266 to see an average NBA game? Like, say, the New Jersey Nets versus the L.A. Clippers? Two hundred sixty-six zops? For a family of four? Which family, the Rockefellers?

Loyalty is for suckers
Todays sports fans just seem to accept the fact that players are going to jump around willy-nilly, and so they've learned to adjust their affections accordingly. Don't get attached. Jerry Seinfeld said it best once, that you don't cheer for people in sports anymore, but for a uniform -- for "laundry."

A Muck of a mess
The New York Rangers' mediocore 6-10-3 record isn't the only reason coach John Muckler's job is hanging by a thread. Muckler would be more secure if he had more allies in the dressing room. But his staunchest supporter, Wayne Gretzky, retired, and most of the other Rangers have developed amnesia.

Chilly air brings with it a draft
As I sat in the Soldier Field press box before the Vikings-Bears game, staring across at the Walter Payton "34'' flag at half-staff, what was I thinking of? The NFL Draft and Ron Dayne and Randy Moss and the Baltimore Ravens, that's what.

Let's go for two
The most underutilized possibility in all of sports is the two-point conversion in football. I have thought that for a long time. You score the touchdown. You get the ball on the two-yard line. You can kick the perfunctory extra point or you can run or pass and increase your point production by 100 percent. What's the problem?

These Vikings are going nowhere
There seems to be something missing on the Minnesota Vikings. I know I picked them, preseason, to meet Jacksonville in the Super Bowl, and perhaps it could still happen. But the more I see of quarterback Jeff George, the less I like him, and I have a feeling his teammates might be seeing it that way, too.

Foul shooting will win games early on
The new emphasis on limiting physical contact by defenses will be the best thing to happen to the NBA in years -- eventually. But first, things will have to get worse before they get better. Expect to see lots of players in quick foul trouble.
