• Changing an OS on the Fly: Loading Linux Modules
  Modules are a great tool and a wonderful capability that Linux provides to those who use it. The root user has full control over what modules are loaded and which ones are not loaded. If support for something is needed, and it is undesirable to have it built into the kernel, then the module can be loaded on the fly, whenever support for some functionality or hardware is needed. When the support provided by that module is no longer needed, it can be removed, and the memory resources allocated to that module will be freed. As the example for today, we will discuss the module called ppp, which must be loaded in order for Linux to be able to create a connection to the Internet, such as by a modem. PPP stands for "point-to-point protocol" and is the most widely-used protocol for remote connections to the Internet. Users who connect their computers to an Internet Service Provider by modem are most likely using a PPP connection.
