Known Compatible Tcl/Tk Platforms

Here we list some common platforms that we know Tcl and Tk work with, either first hand or via reliable reports. Where known, the compilers are also listed. Tcl/Tk will compile on most Unix-like OSes, and there have been ports to less common platforms (especially just Tcl) that have been supported by the community that are available in the Tcl FAQ. The various UNIX-like systems listed below appear in the configure scripts used when compiling Tcl/Tk. Tcl/Tk does require an ANSI C compatible compiler. If you have trouble building Tcl/Tk your system, please check the installation database described below.

This list was generated by looking at the autoconf script used to compile Tcl. The configure process is very general and will actually handle a wider array of platforms than those listed here. If you need to adjust our configure scripts for your platform, please submit your fixes to us so we can incorporate them into our standard configure scripts.

Supported Tcl/Tk Platforms

Scriptics supports Tcl/Tk on some, but not all, of the platforms in the above list. On our supported platforms we provide TclPro binaries and TclCare support for Tcl/Tk and TclPro. Scriptics regularly tests new releases on these platforms, so we have maximum confidence that Tcl and Tk work there. These platforms are listed here:
  • Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 (Intel)
  • Solaris 2.5, 2.6, 7 (SPARC)
  • HP-UX 10.20
  • Linux (Intel, Red Hat 5.0+, SuSE 6.0+)
  • SGI IRIX 6.3+
Note: The Linux distribution is for the Intel platform and the glibc2 C library.

Tcl/Tk Installation Database

There is an on-line database that keeps track of the platforms to which Tcl and Tk have been ported, along with information about what had to be done to get Tcl and Tk to compile. The information in the database is provided by people in the Tcl/Tk user community. If you're having trouble getting a release to install, take a look at the database for your release to see if someone else has already solved the problem. If there's no information for your release, check for previous releases also; perhaps there is information there that will be useful. If you install Tcl and Tk successfully, please add a new entry to the database if there isn't already one for your platform. Installation information is currently available for the following releases: http://www.scriptics.com/cgi-bin
