Bill Day, Technology Evangelist Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Bill Day is a Technology Evangelist at Sun Microsystems. He writes "JavaTM Device Programming," a monthly
technical column for JavaWorldTM magazine, as well as a weekly Computing Careers column for the JavaTM Career
Dispatch and Dr. Dobb's Developer Careers. Bill has contributed feature articles to CNN.com, SunWorldTM
magazine, Gamasutra, and Sun's JavaTM technology site and speaks frequently on Java technology-based
multimedia and consumer device programming.
Prior to joining Sun, Bill was a software engineer at Silicon Graphics. Bill held fellowships with the Honeywell
Technology Center, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Bill has a
BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Oklahoma and completed one year of graduate studies in
Scientific Computation at the University of Minnesota.

Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) for Mobile Devices

Most of us use more computers embedded in devices and appliances than we do in PCs, workstations and
mainframes combined. These computers are embedded everywhere and are increasingly networked.
The JavaTM 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2METM) addresses this vast space of ubiquitous networked consumer and
embedded devices, from smart cards, pagers and mobile phones, all the way up to set-top boxes and automobile
entertainment and navigation systems.
Come learn more about the underlying technologies and the various profiles that are taking shape with J2ME
technology. This presentation will focus on Mobile Information Device (MID) technologies for mobile phones and
related devices with wireless connections. We will give you an under-the-hood view (including status and
roadmap) of J2ME technologies along with K Virtual Machine (KVM), KVM development tools, and related MID
APIs. We will also discuss technologies used to connect these devices to consumer and enterprise services,
including standard data formats (WML, Compact HTML and XHTML/XML) as well as neutral wire protocols (most
importantly, HTTP/HTTPS and WAP protocols).
The session assumes attendees will be deploying applications in J2ME technology-based environments. Its
material is targeted to developers with intermediate to advanced experience in the Java programming language
and the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SETM) APIs, but with little direct experience with consumer or
embedded device programming.
