Doug Sutherland

Doug Sutherland, JavaTM Technology Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Doug Sutherland is a staff engineer and technology evangelist in the JavaTM Software division at Sun Microsystems. He specializes in distributed computing with JiniTM Technology. He also evangelizes the potential of inter-connectivity between tiny embedded microprocessors and software services via the global Internet. Doug has published several papers about JavaTM Technology RMI, and spends a lot of time educating software developers worldwide about Sun technologies. He has an extensive background in enterprise computing, but is now focused on leveraging the network for industrial automation, scientific application, consumer electronics, and other network services.

The Magic of JiniTM

JiniTM Connection Technology from Sun Microsystems is a set of protocols built on top of the Java Virtual Machine1, designed to simplify the configuration and access of hardware devices and software services on a network. Jini creates a Java-centric, homogeneous view of the network, leveraging Java's ability to safely move code dynamically about. This model makes it possible to add new services or devices with no configuration requirements. It also makes it possible to execute new services without pre-installing software on client machines. This session will provide a high level overview of the Jini project, with the objective of illustrating key Jini concepts. It will cover the general challenges associated with distributed computing, and proceed to explain how Java technology goes a long way towards overcoming those challenges.
