Question of the Week No. 2

Question of the Week presents answers to key questions posed by the developer community. The intent is to pass this important, but not always easy-to-find information on to JDC members. The questions are selected from the JDC newsgroups generally because: they are frequently asked, they are significant or timely, or their answers are not easily accessible.

Note: If you have a question to which you need an answer, try the JDC newsgroups. You can read through the existing newsgroups, or with your free JDC membership, you can post new messages or threads.

Question: JDKTM 1.2 Beta 4 and the classes.zip file

Where can I find the classes.zip file in JDK 1.2 Beta 4? It is not in the same place as in JDK 1.2 Beta 3. The rt.jar file I found does not have the Swing components in java.awt.swing. Why these differences ?

Answer:

One of the big changes in Beta 4 is that the JDK now consists of two separate packages.

The tools, such as javac, are in the normal bin directory but now the Java Runtime Environment is separated into the jre directory.

By running javac from the bin directory you will automatically pick up the tools.jar file from the lib directory. The rest of the classes and libraries are then retrieved from the jre directory, which includes the rt.jar file.

In theory this should make it easier for developers to 'package' an application without including all the JDK.

The Swing classes have gone back to the com.sun.java.swing.* naming. See the Swing Developer Connection site for information about the naming issue.

You should make a Question Of The Day. Javasoft is my Home page, I visit it dayly, and I'm sure many other people do.

Anyone that asked any of the questions covered here
does not qualify to download Beta software. Everything
was documented (I feel well) in JDK1.2beta4.

You will still get JRE releases, the beta page
has both available from one page at the moment

I am developing an Internet application that uses
HTTPS (SSL). However, the java plug-in currently
does not support HTTPS (SSL). Its FAG says
that that feature will be included in the future
release. Please let me know the time frame (month/year)
so that I can determine whether I can use
the Java Plug-in. Thank you.

We are in the process of submitting various proposals.
We have settled on a three-tier solution using Java applets,
and a middle tiered server connecting to a SQL database via
JDBC. The big question is the middle tier and the
connection to the applets. Servlets, sockets, RMI, CORBA/IDL?
I can't seem to find any information to do a comparasion regarding
speed(under various loads), ease of implementation,
security, etc. Any suggestions?

Regards,
R Stack

Can we please have QUESTION OF THE DAY...?
I am sure there are enough people visiting the
site to warrent that. In any case most people
would be more likely to look at this section if
they thought it would be changing every day.

Besides who cares where classes.zip is*?

*ok so maybe they do, but do we really need a whole
week to be told? PS. Questions are a great idea...!

Comment: OK, now you ship the JSDK as the separate product.
Unfortunately, there's a catch: officially, you support it only on two platforms: Win and Solaris/SPARC.
OK, I decided to try and figured out that the only (apparently) system-specific executable is servletrunner.
Closer examination shows that this is a shell script, which doesn't really care about the OS as long as it's UNIX.

Why don't you announce it as just UNIX? It would've saved all us some time...

What do we as developers have to do (if anything) to get 1.1 RMI code to compile and run in 1.2?
