Question of the Week No. 7
Researched by Calvin Austin

Question of the Week presents answers to key questions posed by the developer community. The intent is to pass this important, but not always easy-to-find information on to JDC members. The questions are selected from the JDC newsgroups generally because: they are frequently asked, they are significant or timely, or their answers are not easily accessible.

Note: If you have a question to which you need an answer, try the JDC newsgroups. You can read through the existing newsgroups, or with your free JDC membership, you can post new messages or threads.

Question of the Week Archive

Question: How can I access the JavaTM console from the Java TM Plug-in?

How I can display the Java console when I'm running my applet from the Java Plug-in?

I have a feeling that my applet is throwing some kind of exception but without being able to see the System.out stream it is difficult to debug.

Answer:

You can display the Java Console whenever you use the Java Plug-in via the Java Plug-in control panel. This application is installed with the Java Plug-in and is available from the Start menu on a Win95/WinNT machine.

You can enable the 'Show Java Console' option from the Basic Properties window.

Many thanks to JDC Member, paternostro for contributing to this answer.

RE: Java Console from Java Plug-in

My installation of the the Java Plug-in does not have
the plugin control panel. A colleagues installation
does. I have not been able to find the .bat/.exe or
whatever for it either.

Well we are just ironing out the system to
do once a week at the moment. If there was
demand we could do them more frequently

You can post a question by using the groupreader
applet from the toolbar navigation link on the left
