Zend Interview
An interview with the developers of Zend. Zend is a scripting engine developed by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans (hence the name Zend). Both are members of the core development team of PHP, and wrote large portions of PHP 3.0, including the language implementation and some of the popular modules like the MySQL, Sybase and PostgreSQL modules.

As much as I'd like that optimizer for free, you have to understand these people put an incredible amount of time into the project. I cannot judge, how the MySQL licensing is profitable, but from the marketing point of view, the mentioned solution of distributing the optimizer seems absolutely perfect. And for the average user, I find PHP3's speed absolutely satisfying.
I dont think someone will put so much effort in developing a faster solution to Zend without the optimizer. Of course it might happen, but it might all depend on the price tag of that optimizer.
