Zend Interview
An interview with the developers of Zend. Zend is a scripting engine developed by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans (hence the name Zend). Both are members of the core development team of PHP, and wrote large portions of PHP 3.0, including the language implementation and some of the popular modules like the MySQL, Sybase and PostgreSQL modules.

Well, what I'd like to say is that I would like to see Zend GPL'ized. There are a lot of reasons to say that, and mostly are from a philosophical point of view.
I don't even remotely think that you, Andy and Zeev, aren't to be paid for your work. Moreover, I work with php all days, I believe it is a top-quality product, and I would be more than ready to pay for it if need should arise.
But the problem is that I'm not sure that "bastardizing" the license could do good to the program... as I said, it is more than else a philosophical approach: if php shouldn't be any more free, people could stop be interested in it, and no open-source project can live on without supporters. If the "commercial-part", on the other side, is not interesting enough for buyers, it could go unnoticed... so you won't make the money you deserve, and YOU could lose interest in the project...
It's a very difficult balance to reach, I'm afraid.
Alas, I don't have the perfect solution - wish I had! - so I'm not in the position to criticize your choice. I only hope you will find enough sponsors to make your living, and leave the project an open one...
For the moment, count me in the PHP enthusiast group!
