I *did* get back into that particular obsession. :(
But boy, do I have results! Now for refinement...
---------- Tue Aug 31 14:08:23 GMT 1999 ----------
Main things I've checked in lately have been more
GREY/RGB->Indexed conversion features. No actual
quantizer improvements though - I think it would be
dangerous to get back into that particular obsession...
---------- Wed Jun 9 13:54:05 GMT 1999 ----------
Quantization is hard. I have about four distinct
branches of RGB->Indexed conversion with a couple
of completely different techniques and variations
thereof. And none of them live up to the goal of
One Quantizer To Bring Them All And In The Darkness
Bind Them. Meanwhile I've wasted ~250 hours of
development with this obsession. :(

hm. I did some gnome work today. I am very happy with the new
icons in andersca's tasklist applet. Yay!

Whee! image hoses work now!
tml fixed up the broken code I committed to cvs and
made image hose work. Chekc out:
http://adrian.gimp.org/pixmap-brush/hose1.jpg
http://adrian.gimp.org/pixmap-brush/hose-2.jpg
For some example images of output from the image hose.
btw, if you want the "hoses" used to generate those
images grab the fire.gih, vine.gih.gz, and boxwood.gih.gz .
Gunzip them, and copy them to your brushes dir.
Then use the pixmap tool in gimp in current cvs.
I'll try to put up some more details on the hose format later.

The Chaos Communication Camp was a great success.
I have already put up a few pics but hope to get
more and better ones online soon:
http://sven.gimp.org/camp/
I'm now working on scalabe brushes and other nice
things you can use pressure-sensitive input-devices
for. At the camp things already looked promising;
all I have to do is to add a GUI and probably look
into libart to see if it can help to do affine
transformations with the brushes (tilt!).
Hmm, my ramblings are over at: http://www.snorfle.net/ramblings/ ... so you
can go look at them there if you wish.
I've found work. Now it looks like I'll be rather busy for a while.

Well, between work and sleep we've managed to beat GIMP 1.0 into
building against GTK+ 1.2. Thanks, Owen and Yosh for helping out. It
actually mostly works. There were some bugs in 1.0.3, but "they've
been fixed in CVS (tm)". GIMP seems faster using gdk_rgb. Look for
1.0.4 soon.

I bought some abrassive(sp?) cleaning substances today and got rid of the
dingyness in my bathroom. It actually looks aceptable again! I guess that
book "How to turn your bathroom into the social center of your life" really
helped! But I do mourn 3 casualties. But hey, if you wanna come of a chat, we
can stay for hours on end in the bathroom!
My seminar is starting to make sense. At least partially. And no, people
usually don't move in that club, Sven. But thats got more to do with what kind
of music was playing (and as a consequence, what crowd was attracted), than
the general Clausthal people.
Oh, btw, Xach, I sent you a parcel containing all the dingyness my bathroom
had. Hope you like it!

Whoa! Been a while since I've updated my .plan here.
I'm working on _way_ too many projects right now. There's still
a fair amount of work to get the antialiased rendering backend
for the canvas working properly. I'm also spending some time on
the gnome-text module. Things I plan to do soonish include:
* Make gnome-text renderers
* Make a bezier editing item for the canvas
* Make a rich-text item for the canvas (based on gnome-text)
* Port gfonted to gnome and make it moderately useful
* And yes, the natural brush stuff is still on my plate

Well, one of the things I want to do soon is retrofit Gimp to use
GdkRgb (see http://www.levien.com/gdkrgb for a bit more info). But
there is an issue regarding colormaps on 8-bit displays. GdkRgb
wants to use the colorcube for _everything_, including foreground
and background color display, as well as indexed images. Is this a
problem? Let me know.
I think I'll do affine transformations of the brush next. This is
towards the implementation of the brush ideas in
http://www.levien.com/gimp/brush-arch.html .
Loki 0.0.2 is out! <a href="http://www.gimp.org/~rock">Get it!</a>
This release has some new features and some new bugs. I'm releasing it
because I am going on a mission and won't be able to maintain it for two
years.
Because I'll be on a mission, I will have intermittent at best access to
the Internet. However, you can reach me by snail mail at:

Personal comments and religious questions are welcome. Please don't
bother me with computer stuff. You can tell me when I get back. :)

Well, the plugin querying stuff works now.. except for registering menus.
Of course, I guess I need a gui to do that eh ? :)

Back from the wedding. Had a good time but was too busy to get any work
done on any of my projects. I spent today on the mystery project, getting
the CORBA interface to the point where I think it's ok. I'm going to be
working on client registration stuff next so it won't be long and we
can do the port to atech.
-------------- Mon Aug 3 01:45:53 PDT 1998
Well, the mystery project is fairing well. It resembles something real
now and I think the corba interface is ok anyway. I don't know if I
should be spending so much time on it, but.. I guess, I'm learning lots,
and the client/plugin interface can be easily ported over to atech so
all is not lost even if it is a crazy idea :)
-------------- Wed Jul 29 01:20:06 PDT 1998
Hmm.. getting late. I've managed to get two way communication happening
with ORBit now. So plugins can send to the server, and the server can send
to the plugins. It seems simple enough, but it took some figuring (and a
few _stupid_ mistakes that costed me a lot of time.. I'm too tired for this).
I've almost got everything I need for a plugin API using CORBA, just need to
write a few registration functions and away I go. Then I'll port it from
the mystery project to atech to keep lewing happy :)
