docs_head

The Gimp is a very complicated program for users and developers alike, and as with all complicated software, documentation can be a key factor in its success. GIMP, like all free software projects, relies on both its developers and its users to provide documentation.

>Core Tools

Covers the basic set of image manipulation tools that the gimp provides, such as the Clone Tool, the Pencil, etc. Particular's about individual tool are provided, so that hopefully a GIMP novice can get a good understanding of what's available in the GIMP.

>Gimp Manual

Karin Kylander and Olaf S have written a very nice User Manual . It is also available in sgml/ps/pdf formats at ftp://manual.gimp.org/pub/manual/.

>Tutorial

Detailed examples of what GIMP can do and how to duplicate it. To get the results out of the GIMP, it is neccesary to know not only the technical details, but also some artistic tricks and tips. This section is to provide material to allow the GIMP user to learn by doing.

>Plugin Examples

Examples of what some of the plug-ins can do. Provide a before and after demonstation of the plug-ins. Possibly list some useful settings for the plugins too.

>User FAQ

Answers to the most Frequently asked questions from the users perspective on GIMP. Compiled and maintained by Mile's O Neal.

>Installation Help

Information on how to compile and install GIMP. This can somethimes be a daunting task, but this section is intended to provide solutions to some of the more common problems. Also offers links to any extra software that may be needed to compile GIMP or it's plugins.

>PDB

PDB, or Procedural Data-Base, is an external interface to most of the internal functions of GIMP, its plugins, and it's scripts. It allows for things like Script-Fu to duplicate by means of a script, anything that a user could do through the user interface. It is a very powerful feature of the GIMP, and alas, a fairly complicated one.

This section of the docs outlines the functions that available via the PDB and how to use them.

>Developers Faq

Answers to Frequently asked questions by GIMP developers.

>Plug-in Development

Information and documentation on writing and installing GIMP plugins.

>Gtk Tutorial

Documentation on using GTK, the gui toolkit in which the GIMP is written. Useful to plugin authors or anyone interested in using GTK for developing applications.
