The GIMP is a very sophicated application and can be imposing for the new user and the experienced user alike. While using the basic set of core tools isnt too difficult, getting the most out of them is an art. And theres no better way to learn an art than through an apprenticeship. Perhaps setting up a GIMP apprenticeship program would be a bit excessive, but a nice set of step by step tutorials is a good start on learning to make the most of the GIMP.

The GIMP is all about finding new ways to do things and mutating ideas and images into all sorts of wonderful things. So bear in mind that the tutorials presented here are at best a suggestion for one way to do something. Feel free to experiment and create. And after coming up with something marvelous, write up a nice tutorial and send it to us.

The best place to look for more GIMP tutorials is Nem W. Schlecht's Gimp Tutorial Pointers Page . This offers a very nice set of links to all the GIMP Tutorials available on the web.

It should be noted that many of these tutorials may be originally written for GIMP verison .54, and are outdated.

>Other source of Tutorials

It seems as if for some reason there are also a lot of tutorials out there on the net for some commercial GIMP work-alike programs. Tutorials for these programs (such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Photopaint, JASC Paint Shop Pro and other boring names) translate very well for the GIMP. So if you see a tutorial out there for an effect you really like, but it's for one of those other programs, give it a shot with the GIMP.
