Dawn 0.6.0

GFinder

Contributed by Michael Hanni on Friday September 10, @06:44PM

Enrico Sersale has released a developer release of his "Finder"-like file manager for GNUstep entitled GFinder. This file manager sports a nice interface that allows you to manage your filesystem from various windows (each directory opened gets you a new window.) Enrico warns that this is only the beginning and there are plenty of bugs, but with your help he hopes to make this a powerful, bugfree, application for the masses. You can find a copy of the source, and a screenshot, at Enrico's GFinder site.

This is a must see! Nice work Enrico!

0.6.0: The New Dawn

Contributed by Michael Hanni on Thursday September 09, @03:33PM

GNUstep version 0.6.0 has been released. This release is the result of 6 months of hard work from the GNUstep developers and contributors from throughout the globe. The advances from 0.5.5 are so amazing that even I find myself scratching my head in amazement. I would like to thank everyone who made this release possible! Without the dedication of our developers (especially Richard Frith-Macdonald, and Adam Fedor) GNUstep would not have come this far...

However, work continues at a brisk pace. New developments are already showing up in the CVS tree. Now is a great time to be a GNUstep developer, so if you would like to join the bandwagon please find something that needs to be done (by checking the TODO list) and do it (of course please let us know what you are working on so you don't redo something someone else is doing)!

Now go download Dawn and enjoy!

AppKit bug squashing, feature adding.

Contributed by Michael Hanni on Sunday August 29, @02:50AM

The core GNUstep developers, plus contributors from around the world, are putting the finishing touches on the next major GNUstep release: 0.6.0. This next release promises to be one of the high marks so far of the GNUstep project. However, new features are already on the horizon for the post-Dawn (0.6.0) release.

Thanks to Carl Lindberg the NSDocument, NSDocumentController, and NSWindowController classes are almost completly implemented. The GNUstep Text Network team is feverishly working on their baby, NSLayoutManager. The hope is that 0.6.x where x > 0 will include a functioning Text Network. NSOutlineView, NSTableView, and other important gui classes are in the pipeline.

The GNU AppKit's future looks bright indeed.

A few changes to the newswire...

Contributed by Michael Hanni on Sunday August 29, @02:42AM

You might have noticed that there are few minor cosmetic changes to the newswire. The only visually noticable is the new topic icon to the left of the story. This icon can change according to the story. From here on out you'll see what I mean...

Any GCC hackers out there?

Contributed by Michael Hanni on Sunday August 22, @04:23PM

The GNUstep project is need of a GCC/EGCS hacker who could help us support various compiler functions on a few platforms. We are mainly interested in someone who has working knowledge of the GCC source and could help fellow GNUstep developers port platform specific GCC code to various operating systems and architectures. If you would like to help please email Richard Frith-Macdonald or myself. This is very important work because without it very important things, like D.O. and invocation, will not work properly on some platforms -- making GNUstep much less usable.
