Job Title : Senior Software Engineer.
Electronic Technician (ET) is a service technician tool (Real Time Software) used for servicing the Electronic Control Module (ECM) on various Caterpillar Machines. An ECM is the heart of the control system and governs the total functioning of Caterpillar machines. A service technician can use ET to run Diagnostic tests, Calibration, watch various Status parameters and trouble shoot any problem that may occur in the machines.
As a Senior Software Engineer in the team, my responsibilities and contributions were as follows:
Designing and developing User Interface and C classes.
I have developed various User interface classes and process classes to encapsulate the Diagnostic and calibration feartures in ET. I also developed database classes to encapsulate the database. I used Visio to design and model these Classes.
Developing an ECM Simulator. ET communicates to the ECM software, one cannot test ET if the ECM software is not available. We (a team of 5) developed an application using Visual Basic 6.0, nicked named Rufus, which would simulate any ECM. This software now replaces the real ECM during the preliminary testing phase and saves the department $419,848 per year. We were awarded the Best Continuos Improvement award for this project.
Designed and developed the Data Query Manager for ET.
This is a COM server that encapsulates the ET database and provides interfaces to obtain data from the ET Database. ET and other service technician tools uses the services of the Data Query Manager. I used ATL and ADO to develop this server.
Redesigning and developing the ET Data file creation process. ET uses Btrieve as its database, but data for ET is maintained in MS ACCESS. I redesigned and developed the processes of transfering the MS ACCESS database into Btrieve files for ET to use. The new process takes 4 minutes to complete the whole task, which would otherwise take 30 minutes with the old application. This will save the department $35000 per year. This got nominated for the Best Continuos Improvement award.
Designing and developing the ET Internationalization process. ET is supported in five international languages. I developed an application that extracts the strings from the resource files and the data files that needs translation and logs them in a database table. This is then send to the translators for translation. After the translation this application again creates the language specific resource files and data files for ET to use. This will save the department $ 24000 per year. This got nominated for the Best Continuos Improvement award.
Designed and developed a DDE client DLL to interact with ET. There is a requirement for other service tools software to talk to ET. This communication is handled through DDE. ET is a DDE server. To make this communication simpler for the client software, I developed a dynamic link library that would encapsulate all the client side code required for the DDE conversation and provided some simple exported functions for the clients to use to initiate the conversation. This took out the heavy load of work for any client that might wish to communicate with ET. I implemented DDE using DDEML.
