Dateline: 03/14/97

I was surfing around recently and noticed a few online Java publications that I hadn't seen before. Figured I wasn't alone here and thought I would tell you about what I found... If you find any more, let me know... An alphabetical listing is provided in the resource library. That list includes some sources that are not as strictly oriented towards Java, but do have a Java article or two on occasion.

JavaWorld

JavaWorld is an online-only publication from IDG. They recently celebrated their first anniversary. Issues come out on the 15th of the month with lots of news, plenty of source examples, and ads, ads, ads. But, hey, its free. Just recently, they added searching of past issues.

Prior to JavaWorld, IDG put their Java articles in SunWorld. You still might find an article on it there. However, you are more likely to find it in another online publication of theirs called NetscapeWorld.

Java Report

Java Report (from SIGS) was the first Java-only print publication. There is also an online supplement. The online part is growing and growing, mostly for competitive reasons.

Java Developer's Journal

Java Developer's Journal (SYS-CON) probably came next. This one was launched as a combined online and print publication. Initially bi-monthly and now monthly, the printed version appears online a few months later. Online has additional articles.

Non-English

A handful of magazines are for the non-English reader. There may be few, but one of them, Pause Java [French], scooped everyone with an early article on Java 1.1. Java Spektrum [German] and Java Magazine [Japanese] round out the field. Surprisingly, I couldn't locate a Spanish one.

And The Rest...

Javaology is a monthly online trade rag that includes frequent news updates. Internet Java & ActiveX Advisor is a print magazine with aperiodic online samples. Java Newsletter is a consulting firm's newsletter, published monthly. Includes some decent tips and tutorials. JavaZine is an European online Java resource, complete with Q&A, reviews, and news. PowerBuilder & Java Journal On-Line (PB&J) is an online resource with quarterly CDs sent with all the articles. VRMLSite talks about VRML/Java interactions.

One more worth noting is Sun's own Java Developer's Connection. I save this one for last because it costs $495 / year. However, there is some excellent information available through it, including weekly online chats, tutorials, articles, training discounts, and more.

Other Tidbits

Not exactly something about Java, but from someplace that is fairly heavily into it... Stop by Gamelan and win a US Robotics 56k x2 modem. Two a day for 56 days starting March 10^th... Gee, that makes the last day May 4^th, if my math is right.
