Pre-Holidays Java RushDateline: 12/23/97 With the holidays coming upon us and everyone wanting to get things out before the end of the year, there has been lots of new toys to play with and announcements to read about. Even a new Swing tutorial. Getting StartedRead What is a Java Program, from James Crabb, if you are new to Java and need to get your bearings. Check out a new tutorial I found online, this one on Data Structures. An excerpt of O'Reilly's Java Examples in a Nutshell is appearing in Web Review. It walks you through the process of creating your first applet. Also at Web Review, a look at The 10 Most Common Java Programming Mistakes. There is a tutorial on Creating customizers for your JavaBeans at developer.com. Part II off the Java Developer Connection's Swing tutorial is now online. Give it a try and pick up the skills necessary to use the more advanced capabilities of Swing. Also, swing on over to the new Swing Connection and read up on the latest news from the Swing development team. Looking at getting starting with the Java 2D features? Stop by the Java Developer Connection to read about new 2D Graphics Features. Like looking under the proverbial Java hood? McGraw-Hill has their Inside the Java Virtual Machine book online in their Beta Books area. [There are some interesting non-Java books there now, too.] Also, take a look Inside Java Class Files at Dr. Dobb's Journal. Ask the Java Pro seems to be back online over at inquiry.com, under new ownership. Their Java Pros seem to be knowledgeable people... Let's see if the new business model allows the concept to survive longer. Tools/News WatchIn addition to the whole slew of products mentioned in the last feature, Sun had even more products to get out before the end of the quarter.
IBM updates various JDKs (among other things): Don't miss various other pieces of news:
Other TidbitsWith the Titanic movie coming out recently, MediaDome has an interesting Java-based explore the Titanic program. Be sure to check it out. And, read an interview of Not Just Java author, Peter van der Linden.
I'll be back next week with more things to do and places to go. Please submit feedback about how you would like to see Focus on Java move into the new year. Would you like more features that point to news-related stories - like this one, author interviews, book reviews, or just very focused topic-oriented stories. See you next time.
