Java 3D API Version 1.2: Implementation Now Available

The Java 3D API Version 1.2 Maintenance Release Implementation is now available for download. The Java 3D 1.2 API is a set of classes for writing three-dimensional graphics applications and 3D applets. It gives developers high level constructs for creating and manipulating 3D geometry and for constructing the structures used in rendering that geometry.  Remember, before installing Java 3D you will first need to install the Java TM 2 environment.  In addition to several bugs fixed and better performance, the Java 3D 1.2 implementation also contains these additional features:
  • Documentation For Utility Classes
  • Offscreen Rendering
  • Model Clipping Planes
  • Graphics2D operations
  • OrientedShape3D Node
  • Multiple Geometries in a single Shape3D Node
  • Geometry and Texture by reference
  • Multi-texture  & Texture Color Table support
  • Additional MediaContaintype
  • New Picking Utilities
More details can be found in the README included with the product.

Java 3D 1.2 API Documentation (does not include documentation for utilities):

NOTE: The Java 3D API documentation does not include documentation for the com.sun.j3d.* packages. Documentation for these packages is available as part of the Java 3D implementation download. Select either the "ZIP file for Windows" or "Compressed TAR file (for UNIX)" link under the "Download the Java 3D 1.2 Implementation Documentation" section.

Java 3DTM Now Available for SGI IRIX® Platform
SGI has made available a developer release of the Java 3D API, version 1.1.3, based on the Java 2 SDK, v 1.2.2. This now enables customers with SGI IRIX systems to develop and execute JavaTM programs written with the Java 3D API. This software can be used with IRIX® 6.2 through 6.5.

Java 3DTM for the Linux Platform

Blackdown has been working on porting the Java 3DTM API to Linux. For more information on these please their Java 3D for Linux page.
HP Licenses the Java 3DTM API!
Sun Microsystems, Inc. signed a licensing agreement with Hewlett-Packard Company to port Java 3D technology to HP-UX, bringing the API one step closer to platform ubiquity. Java 3D Version 1.1.3 is shipping on HP-UX.

Java 3DTM 1.1.3 API

The Java 3DTM 1.1.3 API maintenance release includes new geometry compression utilities and an updated Direct3D beta release. More details can be found in the README included with the product. Remember, before installing Java 3D you will first need to install the JavaTM Platform, Standard Edition environment.
Java 3D 1.1 API Documentation (does not include documentation for utilities):

Java 3D and VRML
Sun Microsystems, along with the Web3D Consortium, has formed the Java 3D and VRML Working Group. One of the goals of this group is to develop a complete Java 3D based VRML browser. Visit the Java 3D and VRML Working Group home page to obtain the latest release of the Java 3D VRML browser as well as more information about this project.

The Java 3D 1.1 API is also available on our Graphics@Sun CD-ROM!
