JavaHelp^TM 1.0 software is a full-featured, platform-independent, extensible help system that enables developers and authors to incorporate online help in applets, components, applications, operating systems, and devices. JavaHelp is a free product and the binaries for JavaHelp are redistributable. Details on the terms and conditions can be found in the JavaHelp license agreement.

Installation has been tested using Java^TM Development Kit (JDK^TM) 1.1.7 and Java^TM 2 Platform, Standard Edition, v1.2 on Win32 and Solaris^TM platforms. On the Mac, it was tested with MacOS 8.1 under MRJ 2.1.

Installation Notes

JavaHelp software can be installed two ways:

• Using InstallAnywhere^TM self-extracting software
• Extracting the software from a Zip archive

Installing the JavaHelp software using InstallAnywhere provides a number of advantages:

• An easy-to-use wizard-based installation/uninstall procedure
• Automatically configured environment
• The JavaHelp demo programs are launched using InstallAnywhere "LaunchAnywhere" technology. This enables the demos to be executed from the Win32 Start menu and executed from the execution path.

• Packages with the "-rt" extension install the JavaHelp system plus a copy of Java^TM 2 Runtime Environment (JRE^TM) that is used by the demo programs and tools.
• Packages with the "-no_rt" extension require that a JRE or JDK^TM be already accessible on your system.

NOTE:

InstallAnywhere is a Java language application and requires JRE/JDK 1.1.6 and higher, or JRE/JavaTM 2 SDK to run. If a JRE/JDK is not already installed on your system, you MUST use the package that includes the JRE (-rt).

Zip Archive

The Zip package can be used to download the JavaHelp software on systems that can't use the InstallAnywhere packages. If you install the Zip package, the demo programs are launched using scripts and you must do the following after the software is extracted:

• Create the JHHOME environment variable that contains the path to the folder in which you installed the JavaHelp software.
• Make sure that the JDK\bin folder or JRE executable is in your execution path.

Download JavaHelp

Choose one of the following download options.

JavaHelp 1.0 + Java^TM 2 Runtime Environment (self-extracting):

This package is intended for customers who prefer a package that includes JRE 1.2.

JavaHelp 1.0 (self-extracting):

This package is intended for customers who already have the JRE installed on their system.

NOTE:	The Unix executable should work for most Unix systems, but has only been tested on Solaris and Linux (using the JRE/JDK from www.blackdown.org).
	The Mac installers built with InstallAnywhere are created in MacBinary format so they can be easily transported to different operating systems. However, this means that the installers cannot be run directly by double-clicking on them; they need to be "de-MacBinaried" first via a tool like StuffitExpander 4.5.
	The current version of InstallAnywhere does not work correctly with the JDK/JRE distributed with the Solaris operating system. On Solaris systems, please use either the package that includes the JavaTM 2 Runtime Environment or the Zip package. JavaHelp and the JavaHelp demos do work correctly with the Solaris JDK/JRE.

JavaHelp 1.0 (Zip):

This package is a Zip archive that contains all of the JavaHelp software. After you extract it on your system you must:

• Create the JHHOME environment variable that contains the path to the folder in which you installed the JavaHelp software.
• Make sure that the JDK\bin folder or JRE executable is in your execution path.

After installing, please read the README file for further instructions.

JavaHelp Newsgroup

A JavaHelp software newsgroup is available for discussion about the JavaHelp software through the Java^SM Developer Connection^SM. You can now enter into discussions with fellow help authors and programmers.

To access the newsgroup, click on "JDC Applets" in the lower left margin from the Java Developer Connection home page, or go to the fol lowing URL:
http://developer .java.sun.com/developer/toolbar.shtml

When the JDC Applet Toolbar pops up, click on "GroupReaderApplet," then select t he "javahelp" group. Click "Post" to bring up a window that will allow you to t ype and submit a question or comment.
