| I've installed StarOffice 5.0 under RedHat 6.0. When I imported Word 6 for Windows files (font Times New Roman) they were displayed as an unreadable jumble. I worked out eventually that this has (I think!) something to do with X's inability to deal with TrueType fonts; so I set about trying to fix this with the TTF HOWTO and X Font Deuglification HOWTO; but didn't get beyond the first step, because when I went to edit /etc/X11/fs/config, I found it was very different from the description in the HOWTOs; and there was a nice little note from someone at RedHat telling me that X's font server did not handle fonts in RedHat Linux--then what does, and how do I go about improving the appearance of fonts in X (and especially StarOffice) and using TTFs?
One other thing: StarOffice is *excruciatingly* slow on my system (P166 laptop, 32Mb--Word 6 loads in less than half a second)--15-30 seconds depending (I think) on which WM I'm using: slow under Gnome, and only a little faster if I run StarOffice with *no* WM at all (if this makes any real difference--I don't know). I read the StarOffice MINI-HOWTO which was for a much earlier version (3.1 I think). It identified the problem in SO's searching through dynamic libraries--is this still the case in 5.0? And is the remedy the same (chroot)?
