Support Low End Mac by shopping Outpost.com and Amazon.com. Best Buys in Used Macs Some Macs were just great when they were new, but haven't fared as well on the used market. Others were best avoided from the start (see Road Apples). And some were simply unaffordable by the average user. A Best Buy rating means you can buy the computer used and have a usable Mac, have some real upgrade options (RAM, CPU, etc.), and current pricing is reasonable in light of age and capability. Prices are approximate and will vary by configuration. Only discontinued Macs are considered for best buy status. Although the G3/233 is an incredible value (now available for under $1,600), that prevents it from being listed here. SE/30: best of the compact Macs, $150 and up. IIci: decent speed, plenty of expansion options, $125 and up. LC III: the first LC that wasn't crippled, plenty of capability for low end use, $125 and up, but relatively rare on the used market. IIfx: wicked fast in 1990, expandable and affordable today, $150 and up, (more with video card). Centris 650: good speed, lots of upgrade options, $400 and up. Power Mac 7500: decent speed; easy, inexpensive, and powerful G3 upgrades; about $1,000. Past $1,000, consider a new G3/233 or the just-announced $1,299 iMac.
