Power Macintosh 7100

Overview

The 7100/66 was the middle of the Power Mac line when Apple introduced it in March 1994. Built into the Quadra 650 case, the 7100 contains three NuBus slots and a PDS. To save money, the 7100 uses RAM for video (up to 615 KB, depending on resolution and bit-depth) and a separate PDS card with VRAM, making it very easy to work with two monitors. For best performance, use the video card, not motherboard video.

The 7100 was upgraded to 80 MHz in January 1995.

Variants

7100av. Includes video-in and video-out. Supports 19" and 21" monitors. Has 2 MB VRAM. (AV card can be added to any 6100 with a free PDS slot.)

Caution

  • Beware bogus 256K cache module AP2544-02 -- it doesn't do anything on the 6100 or 7100. Full details on The L2 Company website.
  • Never run a 7100, 8100, 8150, 9100, or 9150 without a PDS video card or a PDS terminator. This can damage the motherboard. If the video card goes bad, you can replace it with another video card or use motherboard video after installing a PDS accelerator or "Apple Terminator, PDS, WGS 81XX."
