ATM Deluxe 4.5.1: assorted issues

ATM generic icon glitch The Read Me file for ATM Deluxe 4.5.1 states that it fixes a bug so that "PostScript outline file icons now display correctly." Julian Hearne and Geoffrey Smithers both report that, after rebuilding the desktop, the icons did indeed change back to the correct color/display. However, both readers also found that a new problem then appeared: The icons for the ATM control panel and its alias reverted to generic icons. Stephen Giannotti replies: "The ATM icon can be restored by opening the Apple Menu Items folder, selecting the ATM generic icon alias, and choosing the 'Select New Original' radio button. By selecting the updated ATM Control Panel (which is v4.5.1) as opposed to the ATM application (which is still v.4.5) the correct icon will now display." Apparently, we made a minor error in describing the problem reported by Geoffrey Smithers. He clarifies: "The updated ATM control panel and its alias retained their custom icons, it was rather the ATM application (and its alias') that changed to a generic application icon." Geoffrey also adds: "Stephen Giannotti's solution does not fix the problem I describe, and it only occurs after the upgrade to the 4.5.1 version. No problem with the 4.5 version. The only way I have found to fix the problem is to open the ATM application with ResEdit, copy the icon resources for the ATM application icon, then paste it over the generic application icon." Version number glitch After installing the update, the Get Info window of the control panel correctly identifies it as version 4.5.1, but the About ATM screen still says just 4.5. (Thanks, Michael Ostrer.) As Paul Constantine points out, this is because, while the ATM control panel is updated, the separate ATM Deluxe application is not. An it is the application that launches when you open the control panel. Good news re bold/italic fonts Jim Sullivan reports some good news about the updates: "Not only does the ATM/ATR update correct the issues stated in your article, but it also allows you to once again apply a bold and/or italic style to PostScript fonts (as opposed to Adobe's recommended method of selecting a bold/italic version of the font itself). Ever since OS 8.5, applying bold and/or italic styles resulted in erratic spacing between characters when printing to PostScript printers. Now they work again."

ATM 4.5.1/ATR2.5.1: QuarkXPress problems; Printing crash; Launching ATM

ATM/ATR and Quark Adding to our report on ATM 4.5.1: We now have several reports that the latest ATM 4.5.1 and/or ATR 2.5.1 updates still cause problems with QuarkXPress (versions 3.x and/or 4.x). For example: Eric Gray writes: "When I start Quark, 4.04, my toolbar isn't on the screen. I have to hide the toolbar (from the menu) and then show it. When it shows up, it's never in the place I left it when quitting Quark. I uninstalled ATM 4.5.1 Deluxe and ATR 2.5.1, reinstalled my Suitcase 8 demo, and the problem cleared. Reinstalled the ATM stuff, and the problem came back." Tim McManus describes a possibly related problem: " We are experiencing a a strange problem here with ATR 2.5.1 and QuarkXPress 3.32r5. After updating to ATR 2.5.1, the tint pop-up menu on the Colors floating palette no longer works. It appears to be empty. If you move that palette down to the bottom of the screen, the tint menu with percentages appears at the top of the screen (works best at 1600 x 1200). However, when you go to edit colors and select the Pantone pop-up menu, all of the contents are missing and this particular dialog box is stationary, so you cannot select any other colors. Disabling ATR 2.5.1 fixes this problem." Randy Joseph writes: "Just thought you'd like to know that ATM 4.5.1 exhibits the same behavior that 4.0 did when we upgraded to Mac OS 8.5. Weird font problems in QuarkXPress 3.3r5 caused us to downgrade to 8.1 back then. Adobe's response back then was that some fonts are not up to their standards, but this ignores the fact that they worked until the so called upgrades." Pit Stenkhoff writes: "Since we updated to ATM 4.5.1 and ATR 2.5.1 we noticed several random 'pauses' in QuarkXPress 3.32. After a few seconds, the program begins to respond again. We noticed this problem in three of four updated computers, all G3s running Mac OS 8.6." Chris Bailey confirms the pausing problem in in QuarkXPress 3.32 after upgrading to ATM 4.5.x: "I've completely rebuilt three of our UMAX systems from scratch (erased the hard drive, reinstalled all apps from scratch). One is using ATM 4.5 and the other 4.5.1; both have the slowdown problem. The third, which was using ATM 4.5.1, I've reverted back to 4.0.3 -- so far, it seems to be fine." William Kucharski reports seeing none of the above problems. ATM and printing crash? We have not yet confirmed this, but Keith Watling asserts: "Install Mac OS 8.6 and apply all Apple updates to 8.6. Install the complete Multilingual Internet Access Kit using custom install to ensure all the one-byte languages are installed as well as the two-byte ones. Install ATM 4.5.1. Print using the LaserWriter driver and you will crash as the job tries to leave the desktop print queue." Keith is not absolutely certain, but he believes that disabling ATM, WorldScript I 7.5.5 and/or WorldScript II 7.5.5 (or 7.5.6) will prevent the crash. Robin Walker adds: "I confirm this problem. An exhausting session with Conflict Catcher showed that the crash occurred only when ATM 4.5 and WorldScript I and WorldScript II were active. These were the only criteria. Puzzled at the requirement that both WS I and WS II be active, I reasoned that maybe the problem was related to the number of Scripts active in the System file. WS I would active 'm' scripts, WS II would activate 'n' scripts, and maybe 'm+n' was too much for ATM. I experimented by removing 'scripts' from the System file one by one (this can only be done while the Mac is booted from another System Folder or CD-ROM), and confirmed my guess. I could make the problem go away by removing a few WS I scripts, or by removing even fewer WS II scripts. So ATM 4.5 seems to have a crashing problem if there are more than a few system scripts active." Kimo Yap writes: "I had this problem with 4.5 and indeed found that Conflict Catcher indicated WorldScript. However, you can run with 4.5 (and presumably 4.5.1 and the international stuff) if you remove the Asian fonts from the System Fonts folder." Kimo adds: "I can print normally except when the Beijing font is enabled (in the System Folder). However, of the other Asian fonts, I can have the two Osaka fonts, the Tapei, and Seoul fonts all loaded and still print (English) text." Alwin Li writes: "In my experience, there seems to be a three-way conflict between the following software: (1) Both LaserWriter 8 and Adobe Postscript drivers; (2) WorldScript I (7.5.5); and (3) ATM 4.5.x - which causes my computer to freeze when printing. It does not matter whether WorldScript I is actually used, printing all English text freezes the computer all the same with WS I in the Extensions folder. WorldScript II causes no problem for me. Doing any one of the following solves the problem: (1) Printing to a QuickDraw printer (Epson 740 in my case); (2) Removing WorldScript I and reboot; (3) Reverting back to ATM 4.0 (uses Chinese Language Kit)." FYI: launching ATM vs. ATM Deluxe There is an alias to ATM Deluxe in the Adobe Type Manager folder in the Preferences folder of the System Folder. If you should delete this alias, when you select ATM from the Control Panels folder, it will launch ATM 4.5.1 (non-Deluxe) rather than ATM Deluxe.
