Eric Musselman, who joined the Magic in September of 1997 as a scout, was
promoted to assistant coach in Winter of 1998. Musselman brings extensive
background in basketball, which includes scouting and player development.
Musselman came to Orlando after spending the previous seven years as the head coach and prior eight years as the general manager of the Florida Beach Dogs (formerly the Rapid City Thrillers) of the Continental Basketball Association. In 1996-97, Musselman led the Beachdogs to a 38-18 record and into the CBA Finals.
Overall, as a CBA head coach, Musselman recorded a 270-122 record for a .688 winning percentage. His winning percentage is second in CBA history to only former Seattle SuperSonics head coach George Karl.
From 1990-1997, Musselman had 23 CBA-to-NBA player call-ups, the highest mark in the league during that span. He is the only person in league history to coach in five CBA All-Star Games (1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1997) and was the first coach in professional basketball history to win 100 games by the age of 28. At the age of 24, he was the youngest coach in CBA history.
Musselman has also served as head coach of the Florida Sharks of the United States Basketball League. In the summers of 1995 and 1996, he led the Sharks to a combined 49-3 record and consecutive USBL Championships.
In 1990-91, Musselman was an assistant coach with the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves. While in Minnesota, Musselman worked under his father, former Timberwolves' head coach Bill Musselman.
After earning a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of San Diego in 1987, Musselman took a job with the Los Angeles Clippers where he worked in the front office, before taking on the role of assistant director of scouting.
He was a three-time West Coast Athletic Conference All-Academic basketball selection and participated in two NCAA Tournaments as a collegian. Upon graduation, he was selected by Albany in the fifth round (58th overall selection) of the 1987 CBA Draft.
He graduated from Brecksville (Ohio) High School. He and his wife, Wendy, have one son, Michael.
