49ers
The 49ers made a long-term offer to WR J.J. Stokes, hoping to keep him in San Francisco.
Stoking the fire
After applying the franchise player tag to WR Terrell Owens, the 49ers have made moves to try to lock up their other rising star at wideout: J.J. Stokes. Before heading out of the country on a week's vacation, Stokes received a long-term contract offer from the Niners. "I talked to him Friday (Feb. 12) and made an offer to his agent," said John McVay, the 49ers' director of football operations. "He seems to like it here. Everything he says is he wants to stay here. I hope we can make it work." On deal that did work out for McVay was the signing of QB Jeff Garcia, who starred at San Jose State from 1991-93 and recently led the CFL Calgary Roughriders to the 1998 Grey Cup Championship.
