Gunther Cunningham succeeded in building "a foundation" for 1999.

Brisk beginning
New head coach Gunther Cunningham wanted to use the Chiefs' three-day minicamp to implement a no-nonsense football philosophy. He wasted no time getting his message across. From a 5:30 a.m. wakeup call to start camp to a swift end to the final practice, the team accomplished what Cunningham set out to do: Set the tone for the 1999 season. "We had only a couple of off-sides and one dropped snap," Cunningham said. "The focus was good." Cunningham made sure players kept their concentration by having them run a play every 22 seconds. The Kansas City Chiefs had an up and down year. Despite a fast start, the Chiefs suffered through their first losing season since 1988. A strong finish to the year should help the Chiefs in 1999.
