   The original online Linux documentation written by Matt Welsh, founder of the Linux Documentation Project. This basic guide for new users was written in 1992 and updated as recently as 1998 by SSC, publishers of the Linux Journal. The guide now contains more information specific to different Linux distributions.

3. Linux System Administrators Guide

   One of the "official" Linux Documentation Project docs, this task-oriented guide is intended for a person maintaining a Linux system (or any UNIX system.) It includes information on managing users, organizing disk space, booting up and shutting down the system, performing routine backups, etc. The original guide was developed by Lars and now is maintained by Joanna.

4. The Linux Kernel

   Extensive explanation of how the Linux kernel works. Rusing covers memory management, processes, and interprocess communication. While much of this material is similar to what might be covered in any guide to the UNIX kernel, there is specific information about issues relating to a PC architecture such as PCI and interrupt handling.

   A useful newsletter that summarizes activity on the Linux kernel mailing list, developed by Zack Brown. A great way to keep up with cutting edge Linux development without wading through a ton of email.

8. Linux Kernel Module Programming Guide

   This guide is for programmers who want to write modules to extend the Linux OS. It covers the 2.2 kernel. In some respects, the author says he wants to help those people who want to begin to play with the kernel as a way to understanding how it works.

9. Get Acquainted with Linux Security and Optimization System

   An essential guide for network administrators, Mourani provides guidance on installing a Red Hat Linux server that is configured for a high level of security and performance. He offers useful advice on a custom installation, including which packages are unnecessary. It includes sections on backups, firewall security, Sendmail configuration and covers setup of many other technologies including Samba and Squid. This document is only available in PDF.

10. Official Red Hat Linux Reference Guide
    Version: 6.1 (01/01/1999)

    This guide concentrates on installation and system configuration of a Red Hat Linux system. It provides background information on disk partitioning, package management (RPM) and RAID, as well as covering command-line installation. If you don't use the GUI installation or need to understand what additional options you might have during installation, then this guide is useful.

12. The Cathedral and The Bazaar
    Version: 1.45 (08/08/1999)

    This well-known essay in many ways is responsible for defining Open Source development and gaining recognition for its merits. Raymond contrasts the Cathedral-style development model of closed or proprietary software development with the open, distributed development model that have grown up around Linux and other open source projects. Raymond believes that the open source software model produces better software because openness gives access to the software at an early stage and the more people who have that access, the better chance of rooting out problems. "The Cathedral and The Bazaar" was originally presented at the Linux Kongress in May 1997.

    Very basic instructions for installing Red Hat Linux. This guide, which covers the new graphical installation interface, is probably not going to help you understand what choices you need to make during installation (See the Red Hat Reference Guide for that.). It is more useful for those who want a walk-through of the basic procedure before actually doing it themselves.
