Raw I/O Enhancements

Raw I/O enhancements provide high-bandwidth low-overhead scsi disk I/O capabilities. See the FAQ for description.

To enable raw scsi character devices enable the CONFIG_RAW scsi configuration variable.

The various releases of the raw I/O enhancements are available for download from:

As of 05/23/00, there is a new patch enhancing Stephen Tweedie's rawio patchset for the 2.3.99.pre9-2 kernel. This patch allows the I/O queueing and scsi-midlayers to handle kiobuf-based request directly (w/o intermediate buffer_heads). This kiobuf-enhancement patch combines Steven Tweedie's patchset with the scsi and queueing layer enhancements.

There are three patches against the 2.2.13 version of the linux kernel:

Stephan's Patch for 2.2.13

Sgi Enhancements to Stephan's 2.2.13 patch

A patch for 2.2.13 which includes Stephan's and SGI's changes

A version of the dd(1) command which works with raw devices can be downloaded from:

dd command
