Pad Stick
Let Xtreme show you how to strap a stick on your D-pad.
January 26, 1999
One of the oddities of the standard PlayStation controller is the non-continuous D-pad. In fact, some people claim that it's one of the system's shortcomings – the gaps in the D-pad aren't exactly comfortable on the thumb.
A little over a year ago, a little UK company put out the Pad Stick, a small, plastic and rubber contraption that straps around the standard Sony-made controller. Once the device is over the D-pad, you can plug one of the included four sticks. All the sticks are shaped slightly different to give you a choice on comfort, but they each work similar. Three are concaved a bit differently to fit the thumb, and another is shaped like a tiny arcade joystick.
This package is very cheap if you can find it, but the cost pretty much mirrors the quality of the construction. Once the device is secured onto the pad, it's not going to come off without a little effort – and even then, if you try to pull it off, you're running the risk of ripping the rubber that holds the unit onto the controller. Once that rubber breaks, the device is useless. And, you guessed it, we broke ours the first day we got it.
But the Pad Stick is a perfect thumb saver if you're sick of chaffing your skin by doing fireball motions in Street Fighter.
But be aware – it's not something that's made to be constantly put on and removed.
Insert condom joke here.
