Triple Play 2001

EA aims to bring the true excitement of baseball home. New screens and videos of the game in action.

January 18, 2000

For the past few years, EA Sports' Triple Play series has managed to garner quite a bit of praise from the gaming media as well as the gaming public. It has consistently been among the top selling baseball games year after year and constantly gets rated high by the press. As a matter of fact, three of the last four Triple Play titles received scores of 9.0 or better from IGNPSX.

Just like clockwork, EA Sports is set to release its latest game in this series, Triple Play 2001, in spring 2000. As was the case with previous incarnations, TP2001 has the full Major League Baseball and MLBPA licenses. Hence it will feature all of the real MLB teams and players.

In addition to the modern players, for the first time in the Triple Play series, TP2001 brings the legends of the game to the plate with the exclusive MLBPA Big League Challenge Mode. Many of baseball's most celebrated heroes are presented in this mode.

The MLBPA Big League Challenge Mode allows players to pit today's best against some of the best players of all-time like Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Cy Young, and other legends. This mode includes all 12 MLB participants and an Extreme Target Mode where players can hit targets and build up points for added excitement and competition in the home run hitting contest.

On top of that, TP20001 features the exclusive rights to the 500 Home Run Club and players that appear more like their real-life counterparts than ever before. New player models have been created with a wide variety of body shapes and sizes. New star-player facial textures have been added for stars such as Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Pedro Martinez, Chipper Jones, and many others.

Furthermore, signature batting and pitching styles of players such as Mark McGwire, Nomar Garciaparra, Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown, Babe Ruth, and Reggie Jackson has been emulated for use in the game. There are also new scripted animations for situations like umpire arguments, high-fives, and end-game celebrations.

The most common complain that most players have with baseball videogames is that the fielding aspect of the game is uninspiring. To help change this, EA Sports is implementing a new fielder's point-of-view perspective that might change the way players feel about playing defense in baseball videogames.

Basically, this perspective allows the player to play the field from a point-of-view from directly behind the fielder. While it seems like it might have a steep learning curve to it, it does indeed increase the excitement of trying to run down fly balls and field grounders in the infield.

Triple Play 2001 once again looks as if it will be among the best baseball videogames on the Sony PlayStation. Of course, we won't know this for certain until the game is released in March 2000. Until then, enjoy these new screenshots and movies of the game.
