Welcome to Qwest's Year 2000 web site. Qwest ® is actively preparing its systems for the transition to the Year 2000. This web site is designed to provide information to our customers and business associates about Qwests Year 2000 Compliance Program.
The Year 2000 Problem can be traced to the early days of computing, when memory and data storage were very expensive. To conserve these limited resources, computer programmers used two digits, rather than four digits, to identify calendar years. Thus, the year 1998 is identified as "98" and the year 2000 as "00". Because many computer functions are date-sensitive, systems may process incorrect data or experience failures if they do not recognize the year. The implications of the Year 2000 Problem are widespread as everything from elevators, alarm systems and VCRs to communications systems, transportation services, and computer mainframes, networks and PCs could be affected. The Year 2000 Problem presents a challenge to the telecommunications industry which is dependant upon various date related activities.
Qwest understands the magnitude of this problem and is actively working to avoid any interruption of regular business operations and service to its customers. To this end, Qwest has established a dedicated Year 2000 Program Office to address the compliance functions of Qwests affected systems, as well as third party products and applications. Qwest has also retained a leading Year 2000 consulting firm to assist with this effort.
Qwest is committed to meeting the challenge of the Year 2000 and to providing the highest level of service to our customers into the new millennium and beyond.
