Final Wrap-Up

In the non-Olympic senior events, the USA and Great Britain scored highest in the medal count, with two golds and two silvers each. The US took home gold medal finishes in the men's lightweight eight and men's coxed pair, while Great Britain won the men's coxed four and lightweight women's coxless pair. The US also brought home silver medals in the lightweight women's pair and the men's coxed four. Germany snagged four medals as well, taking home a gold in the women's quad. The Japanese men and women made history this weekend. The men's quad won the gold, becoming the first Japanese crew to win a medal at the World Championships. On the women's side, the Japanese quad placed fourth overall, becoming the first Japanese women to qualify for the finals of the World Championships.

Overall, the racing was exciting. In the lightweight men's coxless pair, Canada took the gold during the last 100 meters of the race, outperforming Great Britain, who placed second over Denmark by a mere eight hundredths of a second. The women's coxless four was won by Belarus, with Poland trailing in second. In the lightweight singles, Laila Finska-Bezerra of Finland claimed the title of women's world champion while Czech rower Michel Vabrousek won the men's event.

In the Juniors races, things were a little less exciting. Germany blew away the rest of the field, pulling in ten medals total, including five golds, four silvers and a bronze. Italy, the US, and France pulled in three medals each.

The junior men's quad race, junior men's coxless four, junior men's coxed pair, junior men's eight and the junior women's single scull were all won by the German team. The junior men's single sculls was won by Italian rower Marco Ragazzi, followed by Lithuania, and then Croatia, who just barely edged out the Czech entry by less than 3/10ths of a second. The junior men's double sculls was definitively won by the Italian crew, but the silver and bronze medals were a close race, won by Croatia and the Czech entry, separated by a mere 2.3/10ths of a second. Belaurus snagged two gold medals, easily winning the junior women's quad and junior women's coxless pair, outpacing Norway and Germany respectively.

The USA's gold medal came in the junior women's coxless four, despite the crew crossing over two lanes during the race, waking the silver medalists, the Australians. The junior men's coxed four took silver, while the junior men's coxed four snagged the one bronze medal the US brought home.

Overall, great racing with both the senior and juniors. For more info, check the news and results page.
