BAREFOOT ON THE BEACH
Michael Franks

This review first appeared in the July 1999 issue of
"VISIONS MAGAZINE"

I have been a big fan of Michael Franks since I first heard his "Mr. Blue" one summer long ago in San Diego. He is the only vocalist I can truthfully say that I have every one of his recordings including his "Previously Unavailable." "Barefoot On The Beach"-released on the Windham Hill Jazz label is the perfect way to begin the summer season. Just listening to the title track will have you heading for the beach.

The Encyclopedia of Popular Music has this to say about Michael, "He drew his repertoire from a broad field including currently popular folk music and aspects of the blues....Franks sings with a huskily intimate sound, interpreting lyrics with feeling and imparting a smooth swing to all his performances."

Michael is joined on "Barefoot On The Beach" by such well known jazz artists as Michael and Randy Brecker, Steve Gadd, Chris Hunter, Bob James, Steve Khan, Will Lee and a host of other jazz notables including members of Spyro Gyro.

My favorites on this eleven track CD are "Heart Like An Open Book," "Now Love Has No End,"-with singer Valerie Simpson, "When You Smiled At Me," "Every Time She Whispers," and "Mr. Smooth," My pick for best tracks are "Why Spring Ain't Here," and the seductive "Like Moon Behind A Cloud."

If you find you enjoy the smooth jazz vocalizations of Michael Franks I highly recommend several of his previous releases, "Art Of Tea," "Objects Of Desire," "One Bad Habit," and "Passionfruit."
