Conventions form the life blood of science fiction and fantasy. Most any weekend, you can find one or more going on somewhere in the world. They range in size from dozens (at relaxcons) to thousands (the WorldCon). Guests from all aspects of the genre are invited to participate and their accomplishments are toasted by attendees. Panels on the topics of interest take place, sometimes there is a masquerade, sometimes there is a banquet, awards can be given and parties abound.

Usually, the first question asked when conversation turns to conventions is the date of one in particular. Shortly, the topic of where it is arises. Then, if interested in more details, someone will ask what kind of convention it is. When and where is quite straightforward. What kind is another matter. A convention can focus on SF, fantasy, media, gaming and so on. Or it could mix some or all of the types. It depends on the anticipated membership size and the focus that the organizing committee choses to give the convention.

Here, we have tried to answer all three of these questions: where, when and category. Plus, we've put together a page related to world conventions and bids to hold them.
