Welcome to Shiva Communications Headquarters

Shiva is an instant messaging package written in Java that lets you communicate ICQ style over any kind of network, be it your basement LAN or the Internet. This page is home to the binaries and the source.

Release 0.2 offers fully functional chat and messaging capabilities and support for different user profiles. Check out the documentation section for a walk-through of what you can expect.

WANTED: Mac users who can give us information on how to set up Shiva with Apple's MRJ.

7-12-2000 : Version 0.2.2 (incl. sources) released, license change

Urgency: high

Shiva is finally available under the GPL. As a result of the license change, we are now offering the source code in the download section. Apart from this, there were no importatnt changes. Have fun, folks.

6-10-2000 : Domains for nothin' and our hits for free

Urgency: medium

Thanks to the Christmas Islanders for furnishing us with this nifty domain for zilch and to Sourceforge for wasting server space and bandwidth on us. We're still figuring things out: domain redirection, mailing lists, etc.

5-31-2000 : New Site Layout

Urgency: low

We replaced the layers-intensive design with something even Lynx people can use. This look also allows us to automate the site better in the future.

5-26-2000 : Version 0.2.1 released

Urgency: high

We made a handful of changes and bug fixes (kudos to Morton, Vladimir and John for pointing them out) to the server and client, added a 'Read Next' button to the Incoming Message Dialog (what a toughie ...) and now supply a 'runnit' shell script (UNIX) for the client as requested.

What's Next

Here's a list of TODOs for the time being. The next thing you can expect are the admin tools. As for the question of whether or not there will be a native version for <any OS>, sorry, but no.

File Transfer

Long Range Target - Completion:

This is the primary objective for 0.3 developer's package. Right now, we're still designing the necessary protocol extensions.

We've been discussing a distributed file system and there have been requests for one from people who test-drove the 0.2 release. Offering a way for people to share files in a specific directory sounds nifty but requires putting a lot of brain time on security issues (remember ICQ's web server?). For starters, it's going to be file transfer by request, nothing else.

Applet version

Mid Range Target - Completion:

20%

The current application version of Shiva needs a certain amount of technical prowess to install, mostly due to the Java Runtime Environment. Providing an applet version would decrease the download time to just the Shiva binaries and increase the potential user base and versatility (e.g. private chat rooms on a web page).

Permanent server

Short Range Target - Completion: n/a

Yeah, basement communication with your mom is only so cool. While there's a secret experimental Sboo server up all the time hidden in our headquarters way beneath the Alps, we're still looking for a host for a public service. Anyone? <g>

Administration tools

Mid Range Target - Completion:

The AddUser console command is - lemme check - over two years old (3/1998). It dates back to another application and is nothing more than a hack. It's going to be replaced by something graphical.

Another thingy is web based scripts to automate signup. We had something similar a while back on sboo.ch and we'll make an updated version available soon.
