SLASH: The Slashdot Code

The source code for the site is called "Slash". The Slashdot Like Automated Story-telling Homepage. You can download an ancient version of it below. Someday I'll post a new version, but honestly its a lower priority to me than it ought to be. I'm to busy ironing out kinks and adding features to take a couple days and create a distributable tar ball. It'll happen, but not tomorrow. I'm already working pretty much every waking second of the day. There is a preball of v0.3 sitting in the Code Directory which will probably be the only release at v0.3. It includes user accounts, moderation, and other assorted odds and ends. I'm probably going to ditch 0.3 and start work on 0.4 which adds user customization, better moderation controls, and configurable Slashboxes. It'll be out someday. Maybe. I hope.

Anyway, you're welcome to use the code, but it is provided with no warranty and no support. You're on your own here, and I can't help you if you have problems (and you will have problems! This is fairly alpha code) you are on your own. The only restriction is that you must put a Slashdot Logo and a link back to Slashdot on any site that uses our code. Beyond that, have a ball.

    The code is available here:
  • Slash pre0.3
  • Slash v0.2 (gz | bz2)
  • userdo (gz | bz2)
  • Matthew Sachs has released a beta news daemon that allows a Slash site to serve NNTP. It is very likely that Slashdot will do this soon.

Sites that use Slash

There are a dozen or so, but I've only recently started keeping track. Send me urls if you have one.

Importing of Slashdot Headlines

For those who don't know, you can get ultramode.txt to receive a list of headlines for Slashdot. The document is fairly self explanatory, and the rules are simple:Do whatever you want, but don't access the file more than once every 30 minutes. The server is plenty bogged down without adding a hundred stock tickers refreshing themselves every 60 seconds. If this bogs the server down to much, I'll have to take it down, so play fair! I consider this file to be obsolete and its only staying for backwards compatibility.

Instead of ultramode.txt, I would instead suggest using either slashdot.xml (which isn't quite valid XML yet) or slashdot.rdf (which is a valid My.Netscape style template). Again, please don't load these more than once every 30 minutes, and don't link directly to my images.

Programs that use the Ultramode
These programs are provided as-is. They aren't mine, so don't ask questions about them! Contact the authors of the programs instead...
