UpcdCd - applying OS/2 fixpaks in a different way |

UpdCD is a REXX program, which can be used to produce updated copies of the Warp 4 installation CD-ROM. The resulting CD-ROM integrates all the fixes and updates supported by UpdCD and can be used to easily install a Y2K compliant copy of OS/2 on large hard disks without applying any fixes to the system after installation.
The current version is 0.6, which supports the incorporation of base OS/2, Device Drivers, MPTS, Peer, TCP/IP, Feature
Installer, Netscape Communicator and JAVA 1.1 fixes and updates. The complete version of UpdCD will be available at Warpstock Europe 2000.

HOB is one of these software companies, which never losed sight of OS/2.
In todays product line there are still varying OS/2 applications beside the standard Windows solutions. The presentation will show in brief -native OS/2 solutions e. g.
a 3270 terminal emulation for IBM Mainframe access, an ODBC driver for IBM DB2 data base connectivity and a X server for UNIX connectivity.
Main focus of the presentation is a Java client for Microsoft Windows Terminal Server. HOBLink JWT (Java Windows Terminal) is a 100 % Pure Java product, running on any platform and enables OS/2 clients to use Microsoft Windows 32-bit applications remotely.
Prerequisite for using HOBLink JWT on the client side is simply a web browser. This solution is based on the central use of Microsoft Windows Terminal Server (WTS) an the protocol technology RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) and competes against CITRIX ICA and ODIN.

eComStation is the first authorized OEM desktop client based on the OS/2 Convenience Pack and targeted at the general desktop user market. A key component in IBM's decision to support Serenity Systems was the functionality WiseManager and the general fit between the Serenity Systems' and IBM's strategy regarding the future of Intel space computing environment, that is, the value proposition provided by Managed Clients.
The session will review how WiseManager can be installed on a network server in preparation for automatically building a network of managed clients and performing operational tasks, including software deployment.

gPhoto for OS/2, porting from Linux to OS/2 by example |

This session shows by example how to port a linux application to OS/2. There is already a wide variety of ported Linux applications available for OS/2, showing very well the benefits, that the OS/2 community can take from the success of the open source apporach of Linux and its applications. At the same time this eases the so-called "lack of applications" being available for OS/2.
Nevertheless porting a Linux application is still some kind of
a mistery for those, who never dealt with portable code and the requirements, that program sources must meet in order to be easily portable. Bart van Leeuven will give you a detailed insight into what a developer has to take care for when porting a Linux application to OS/2, starting from the required tools over Linux/Unix-specific details up to encapsulating platform-specific code. The program gPhoto, being ported by him, is being taken as an example of
how to port an existing Linux application and even to enhance it with OS/2 PM/WPS features.
General knowledge of programming and Linux (or other Unix) are recommended when attending this session.
