5. BOOK REVIEW: Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing
A major upgrade of Greenspun's _Database Backed Web Sites_, this
book shares what Philip learned while creating hundreds of Web sites,
most with relational database management systems (RDBMS). The generic-
sounding title belies the book's depth and breadth, this is a superb
effort at demystifying the creation of RDBMS-backed Web sites and Web
site design in general. There's lots of meat here for everyone, but
the main premise seems to be: "If you want to do anything really
interesting on the Web, you're going to need a relational database."
The book is a strange combination of photographs (Greenspun is the
author of Travels with Samantha and an accomplished photographer)
Web site design advise, and technical RDBMS/Tcl information. Greenspun
himself calls it the "first coffee table Web book." The strange thing
is, it all works. If, for some reason, you don't like the text
you can always stare at the beautiful photographs.
Greenspun's focus is to spread the RDBMS gospel and show how Web
services can replace desktop applications. He practices what he
preaches too, on his photo.net site and his own startup Arsdigita
offers free software and services that enable webmasters to add many
of the collaborative services he talks about in the book.
The book is also fun to read, a real accomplishment for such a
technical book. Greenspun's dry wit is evident throughout the book,
often poking fun at conventional wisdom and prominent design gurus
(David Siegel better hide in one of his tunnels). Here's a summary:

interface screw-ups and poor support that IDM's reviewer uncovers.
