Error "Unexpected end of file -39" When Opening Files in Photoshop for Mac OS

Issue

When you try to open a file that you extracted from an archive using Aladdin Systems StuffIt Deluxe 4.5, Adobe Photoshop 4.0.x or later for Mac OS returns the error, "Unexpected end of file -39."

Solution

In StuffIt Deluxe 4.5, choose Edit > Preferences, change the Cross-Platform option to Never, and then re-extract the archive. For other versions of StuffIt, contact Aladdin Systems.

Additional Information

Aladdin Systems reports that some files, typically PDF and EPS files, appear to be corrupted to other applications after extracting them from an archive using StuffIt 4.5. Actually, the problem is not in the compressed files but in the extraction process: StuffIt incorrectly interprets PDF and EPS files as text files.
