This document provides general instructions for downloading and handling Windows files from an Adobe online service (Adobe's Web site and Adobe's FTP site). This document is intended for Adobe customers using Windows-compatible computers who are new to downloading files.

Downloading a File

Because there are hundreds of different software and hardware configurations, we cannot provide basic downloading instructions for your system. If you're unsure how to download a file with your software or hardware, consult the user guide or the manufacturer. Adobe cannot assist you with installing, configuring, or using third-party software or hardware.

To download a file, connect to any of the following Adobe online services, select the file, and download according to your software or hardware's instructions:
- Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com
- Adobe's FTP site at ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/

The Windows files in the Adobe file library are provided in several formats that are widely used in the Windows community for online file distribution. Use the information in the following sections to determine how to open a file after downloading.

Opening .exe and .txt Files

To open a .exe or .txt file, double-click it. Adobe recommends that you move each downloaded .exe (i.e., executable) file into its own folder before running it.

Opening PDF Files

To view a PDF file, open it in an Acrobat viewer (e.g., Acrobat Reader). Acrobat Reader enables you to view, navigate, and print PDF files on several platforms. Acrobat Reader is available for free from all Adobe online services. For more information about Acrobat Reader, see document 315823, "Introduction to Acrobat Reader," or send an e-mail with "315823" in the Subject field to techdocs@adobe.com.

Acrobat Exchange 3.0x and Acrobat 4.0 are similar to Acrobat Reader in that you can use them to view PDF files, but they include additional features that enable you to enhance PDF files (e.g., add sound and video, or insert or delete pages). Acrobat Exchange 3.0x or Acrobat 4.0 is included in the Adobe Acrobat software package, and is not available free of charge. For pricing and availability inside the United States and Canada, call Adobe Customer Services at 800-272-3623. Outside the United States and Canada, contact your local Adobe reseller or distributor.

Opening .zip Files

After downloading a .zip file, you can use the PKZip or WinZip utility to access the file's contents. For more information about PKZip, visit PKWare's Web site at www.pkware.com/shareware. For more information about WinZip, visit the WinZip's Web site at www.winzip.com. You can find PKZip and WinZip online at the locations below. These locations are subject to change.

Note: PKZip and WinZip are shareware utilities. If you use either utility regularly, you are obligated to pay a shareware fee to PKWare, Inc. (PKZip) or Nico Mak Computing, Inc. (WinZip). Read the license agreement that comes with the utility for more details.

Local Bulletin Board Systems
Many local Windows-based bulletin board systems (BBS) provide PKZip and WinZip. If you can connect to a local BBS, check its file library for file utilities. Because each BBS is different, the exact location of these utilities will vary.
