Editorial Reviews

Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver," Coldplay prove they can shift between elated and crushed in a breath, as singer Chris Martin pours out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars. For 10 tracks on Parachutes, he adds new-found meaning to the most tired and overused rock sentiments--love found, love lost, love unrequited--over acoustic guitars and emotionally fraught rock. And for once, all the clichés ring true because Chris Martin genuinely sounds like a man picking over the bones of his life, coming up with just as many reasons to be cheerful as seriously depressed. Not that Parachutes is a depressing album--there's too much conviction to the guitars and hope in Martin's words for that. Instead it's a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it. --Dan Gennoe

From Rough Guides
Indie guitar music hasn't sounded this true and tender for a long while; Coldplay's debut rejects the brash clichŽs and pomp of the cancerous Brit-pop scene, instead drawing on the intelligence, heartache and poetic beauty of The Smiths, Radiohead and, in terms of Chris Martin's sweetly languid vocal style, Jeff Buckley. Though the immediate feelings communicated by this set are desperate and emotionally fraught, there is also a deep sense of hope, exemplified by mountainous guitars and the... read more

3 of 5 stars ...and 1/2 stars (recommended if you like moody music), January 3, 2001
Reviewer: smashnthrash (see more about me)

I first read about the band through Billboard magazine's web site and how they were a huge success in the UK. Then only a month ago, I heard "Yellow" on the local radio station here in Detroit. After liking the song very much, I decided to take a chance by buying the CD.

For the most part, the CD doesn't disappoint. A few words would describe the music: moody, melodic, atmospheric, lo-fi. And yes even depressing at times. But the band's seemingly depressing music comes across to me as uplifting in a strange way. Both the lead singer's soaring voice and the soft guitar playing are hauntingly beautiful. It reminds me of standing out in the middle of a beach watching the sunrise.

In any case, if you're into bands like Travis (similar sound), Radiohead, and (the lighter side of) The Verve, you'll definitely love Coldplay. Standout tracks include "Shiver", "Yellow", and "Everything's Not Lost" (a very uplifting, jazzy song if I might add!). By the way, the music video for "Yellow" is probably the only video I've seen where the lead singer is walking on the beach singing in front of the camera the whole time!

5 of 5 stars They Live In A Beautiful World..., February 12, 2001
Reviewer: Paul Allaer (see more about me) from Cincinnati

Coldplay conquered their UK home territory when "Parachutes" was released there in July 2000. The album "officially" arrived in the US in November, and is finally making some headway due to the exposure of the hard-rocking singalong track "Yellow". Coldplay's "Paracchutes" is the logical extension of Travis' "The Man Who" of a year ago, and is equally compelling, mixing hard to resist melodies (at times rocking hard, at times very intimate) with touching lyrics about love, regret, hope, life.

"Don't Panic" is a stunning album opener, with the immortal line, and pseudo-motto for the band, "We Live in a Beautiful World". (An earlier version of this song can be found on the "Blue Room EP, without that guitar riff during the "Beautiful World" chorus.)

"Shiver", in the UK the first single from the album, starts off with a great riff and then showcases an interplay between vocals and guitar. One of the "harder" songs on the album.

"Spies" starts off with the electric guitar whaling away, to give room to the quiet vocals of Chris Martin, with the rest of the ban then joining in. One of the better songs on the album. (It also is the opening song on their current US tour: with the stage still dark, opening music of Ennio Morricone, yes he of the "spagetti westerns", eventually giving way to the band coming on stage and starting "Spies". If you have a chance to catch them live, don't hesitate! Go! Run!)

"Sparks" is a quiet song, with Chris leading on accoustic guitar and leading to a haunting chorus. It reminded me of Fiona Apple's most "desparate quiet" songs.

"Yellow" is the track that put the band on the US map, and while of course not bad, I find it to be one of the less compelling songs on the album. But a good "singalong" rocker, for sure.

"Trouble" is another piano-led, softer song. Then comes the title track "Parachutes", lasting all of 41 seconds, with Chris on accoustic guitar. After that, the album loses direction for a while, till we get to the closing track "Everything's Not Lost", which is a fitting finale as it nearly sums up what Coldplay is all about: strong melody, touching lyrics, emotions all around.

"Parachutes" is the best album of the year, so far... I know it is technically a Year 2000 album, but oh well... (Incidentally, the album's music samples which you can click on at the top of the page, are pretty good and representative of the album.)

2 of 5 stars I don't get it, May 30, 2001
Reviewer: A music fan from Winston-Salem, NC United States

I don't understand the fascination with this band. I have read all of the rave reviews calling Coldplay "atmospheric", "beautifully tender", "touching", blah, blah, blah. I must be missing something because this album is BORING.

I can normally listen to and enjoy atmospheric music or more tempered rock music with original sound twists, but this is neither. This is simply Oasis at a slow pace. It has neither the atmospheric tones of Radiohead or the sorrowful guitar riffs on some of the Pumkins more relaxed tunes (See "Spaceboy" - Siamese Dream). The album comes close at times, but it's just missing a certain element to push it into the territory that these critics want to place it in. Perhaps the album drones on too much without enough variety between songs. If you suffer from insomnia I would suggest you chew some valerian root and listen to this album for 30 minutes.

5 of 5 stars A truly beautiful record, May 28, 2001
Reviewer: anaisnine (see more about me) from Cary, NC

For those of us who were fans of the late and brilliant Jeff Buckley...there was a noticeable void left in the music world when he drowned tragically back in '97. Who could provide moving meaninful songs, with wonderful melodies, honest lyrics and deliver it with truly beautiful vocal ability?.....Enter Coldplay....I happened to catch a snippet of the single Yellow on CNN's worldbeat and I remember thinking"this may be something for me"..Then it seemed for the next few weeks, I kept hearing about Coldplay. So, finally, after a few weeks, I capitulated and went and got the damn cd, lol..And..from the first song on, I was struck by the warmth, honesty, and overall touching beauty of the album. I put it in and listened to the whole thing straight without skipping or even WANTING to skip one song. Just like with Buckley, it was love at first listen for me. This album isnt for everybody......but if u like some brit pop as I do ( i.e The Sundays, the first Cranberries record, Radiohead, The Verve)..you will LOVE this record. And for Buckley fans, while there will never EVER be another Jeff Buckley, Coldplay's lead singer does have his own lilting falsetto that he uses to good effect on the album, all the while never sounding gimmicky with it. I think the theme of the album, for me, is the sincereity of the music...when you listen to it, you get that nice warm feeling inside..I dunno...maybe thats just me, lol..but this album totally takes me back to my college dorm days when as often as not you'd hear a Sundays album blasting from my room while I lay on the bed in a romantic reverie........
