Editorial Reviews

This delightful book leads you through the basic elements of programming in Scheme (a Lisp dialect) via a series of dialogues with well-chosen questions and exercises. Besides teaching Scheme, The Little Schemer teaches the reader how to think about computation. The authors focus on ten essential concepts of thinking about how to compute and demonstrate how to apply these concepts in inventive ways. The Little Schemer is an excellent book both for the beginner and for the seasoned programmer.

foreword by Gerald J. Sussman

"I learned more about LISP from this book than I have from any of the other LISP books I've read over the years. . . . While other books will tell you the mechanics of LISP, they can leave you largely uninformed on the style of problem-solving for which LISP is optimized. The Little LISPer teaches you how to think in the LISP language. . . an inexpensive, enjoyable introduction." -- Gregg Williams, Byte

5 out of 5 stars A good Scheme book October 5, 1999
Reviewer: Jadoo Junico (jj@moo-moo.net) from New York City
This book is a good introduction to scheme, with a special concentration on recursion. It covers only the basics, but you can follow it up with the sequel. The dialogue method of writing that is used helps to prevent the it from becoming yet another bland programming text.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the cute elephants! June 22, 1999
Reviewer: Christopher Clark (see more about me) from Concord, NH
This is an excellent book, and my understanding of recursion was greatly enhanced. I am going to use Scheme in a programming class next year, and this was just the introduction I needed. But even though this book is thin and is illustrated in a cute way, the last couple chapters of this book are very difficult. The day I finished reading it, I went to the doctor and my blood pressure was up a good deal, because of the brain-wracking I undertook while reading it (mainly the ninth, next to last chapter). It's a classic, and you don't actually need a Scheme interpreter to use it. I didn't use one, though I made sure to do the exercises on paper, and checked them carefully. If you get this book, prepare for quite a (brutal) mind stretcher.

3 out of 5 stars Not for reference -- a good tutorial August 6, 1997
Reviewer: A reader
If you've never used Scheme before, this book
is an excellent tutorial. And it is a
tutorial. Do not attempt to jump ahead or
skip sections. The authors build upon what
was covered in previous sections in a fashion
unique to this text. And that was it's big-
gest weakness for me. Once I have read some-
thing, I don't want to reread the entire text
to catch a small point I missed earlier.

10 for tutorial, 3 for reference.

4 out of 5 stars schemer February 27, 1997
Reviewer: A reader
This book goes through everything, once, and then again to make sure you can use the definition(even though it might not be defined until you read the examples). I have to use this book for a programming language concepts class, and I say..."Don't USE SCHEME! Lisp is much easier!!!"
