| So what
is Oracle's vision? Oracle's vision is very simple: we want to offer freedom of information, regardless of cost, regardless of the technology that the information may reside upon, regardless of your location or the location of the information, and without regard for accepted complexity. |
| We believe that the move to this type of vision will not be supported by the personal computer as we know it. The personal computer is a complex device; it was designed to be complex, and it has not got any simpler, regardless of what some might say. It’s a proprietary device; less than 1% of the world’s population has one, less than 10% of the population of the West has one, and take up is declining. We believe that to move forward to our vision we need an inexpensive system that is standards based. We must move towards a standards base, rather like television; it cannot be the platform of one organisation. |  |
| The changes that are happening in industry play to our core competence, and that is that Oracle is the number one company in database management tools. We securely, economically and efficiently manage information today, and as the world moves to a much more mobile and much greater use of this information, there is no-one better placed to take account of our core competence. |

what businesses are Oracle in? We’re in the database business: that’s all the software you need to build and run database applications. It’s the software to get information into the database in the first place, the tools to create the information in the right way. And we have a suite of applications both for the front and back office, to support your business effectively. |

These technologies provide one of two main business focuses - the other being front and back office applications. |
