Celeron 400A Review (LX6 Upgrade)

Introduction

Contrary to popular belief, it is actually possible to upgrade a system cost-effectively at times. Upgrading an LX6 based system with a Celeron 400A is one of those cases.

In my last article (Blast from the Past: Abit LX6 Review) I presented the "before" benchmark results of my Celeron 400A upgrade; and reviewed Abit's fine LX6 based motherboard. In this follow-up, I will present the benchmark results obtained after I replaced the Pentium II 233Mhz CPU with a Celeron 400A.

It has become painfully obvious that my old standby, the Riva128, was limiting benchmark results for the new processors; therefore as of this article I am changing my standard benchmarking video card from the Asus 3DExplorer (Riva 128) to the Canopus Spectra 2500 (Riva TNT). In this article, I will present benchmark results from both of those video cards.

System Description - Slot 1

• ABIT LX6 motherboard (AGP, supports 75/83)
• Celeron 400A PPGA (with Asus converter board)
• 64Mb 10ns SDRAM (Hyundai, 2x32Mb sticks)
• 6.4Gb Quantum SE hard drive
• Windows 95 OSR 2.5 with usb, agp and udma patches
• Asus 3DExplorer AGP 4Mb (Riva 128)
• ASUS 3DExplorer v2.0en drivers from their ftp site
• Spectra 2500, Riva TNT (AGP, 16Mb)
• Drivers from Canopus' supplied drivers CD
