Due for release in Japan on March 4, 2000, the PS2 looks to be a monster, with unbelievable processing power, unprecedented backwards compatibility, and unheard-of third-party support. Built from the ground up around Sony's new 128-bit "Emotion Engine", the PS2 looks to advance the capabilities of video games far beyond anything seen to date. Add in full compatibility with DVD and current PSX games, memory cards, and controllers, and you have a box with something for everybody. Let's take a look at the system specs...

As you can see from the pictures above, the PS2 unit can be mounted either horizontally or vertically. The system includes an AV multi-out port, an optical digital out port, 2 USB ports for future add-ons, as well as i.Link and PCMCIA connectors. The controllers have been redesigned with fully analog buttons to compliment the twin sticks. This means that the buttons will be sensitive to how hard you press, and this capability can be incorporated into your gaming experience. Imagine being able to choose between a light jab and a roundhouse by how hard and long you press the button...

Now, no matter how good the machine is, if it doesn't have good games, it's a doorstop. Well, the PS2 looks to have the best third-party support in the business. Already, dozens of companies have signed up to create games for Sony's next generation powerhouse. Companies like Capcom, Square, Namco, Hudson, Konami, Tecmo, KOEI, EA, Lucas Arts, Midway and dozens of others are already producing games that will be like nothing you've ever seen before.
